Checkout Optimisation

Shopify checkout optimisation: recover the orders you already paid for

Every abandoned checkout is a customer you already paid to acquire, who had already decided to buy. Most abandonment comes from a short list of causes: shipping or tax that appears too late, forced account creation, too many fields, a missing payment method and steps that load slowly. The fixes are usually small. Finding which ones matter for your store is the work.

Why It Happens

Why shoppers leave at checkout.

Costs that appear late

Shipping, duties or tax revealed only at the last step. A shopper who feels surprised leaves rather than reconsiders.

Forced accounts and long forms

Every extra field and required login is another reason to stop, most of all on a phone.

Missing payment options

The method a buyer trusts, whether an express wallet, a local card or pay later, not offered or offered too late.

Hesitation at the last step

Slow steps, unfamiliar redirects or a checkout that looks different from the store make buyers pause with their card out.

What We Fix

What we change.

01

Checkout diagnostics

Drop-off by step, device and payment method, from your own data, so the fix targets what is actually failing.

02

Costs shown early

Shipping thresholds and delivery costs on the product page and cart, not discovered at the end.

03

A shorter, faster checkout

Guest checkout, fewer fields and express payment first, with checkout extensibility on Shopify Plus where it adds value.

04

Abandonment recovery

Abandoned checkouts enriched in the CDP and followed up in sequence, with the reason they left shaping the message.

Operator Questions

What store owners ask us.

Why do shoppers abandon a Shopify checkout?
Most often because of costs they did not expect, then forced account creation, a long or slow checkout, and a missing payment method they trust. The mix differs by store, so measure drop-off by step before choosing what to fix.
Is checkout abandonment the same as cart abandonment?
No. Cart abandonment counts everyone who added to cart and did not buy, including people saving items for later. Checkout abandonment starts at the checkout itself, so it is usually smaller and closer to a buying decision. Measure them separately.
Do we need Shopify Plus to optimise our checkout?
Not for most of it. Showing costs early, guest checkout, fewer fields and express payment are all available on standard Shopify. Plus adds checkout extensibility and Functions for deeper customisation, worth it when they unlock revenue you can model.
How much abandonment can we expect to recover?
Nobody can tell you that from outside your data. Treat any figure as a hypothesis and test changes on your own traffic. What is certain is that the demand is already paid for, so even a small recovery is high-margin revenue.
